Economy

Poverty lies at the heart to many of Africa’s problems. Most of Sub-Saharan Africa lies in the World Bank’s lowest income category. North Africa are generally better off, the economies are more stable, trade and tourism are higher and Aids less prevalent.

Industry

Africa is rich in natural resources, such as oil, minerals and timber. However, prevalent corruption, government instability, poor infrastructure and the impact Aids has on the working population often makes trade with the rest of the world difficult.

Democracy in Dakar, Episode 3: Election Day

Election Day. Sunday, February 25, 2007 in Senegal, West Africa.
Episode 3 takes place on election day and follows the hip hop group Sen Kumpe as they head to the voting station in their neighborhood Medina in Dakar to vote. The episode continues in the immediate aftermath of the election, as people are sensing that Abdoulaye Wade may have won a slim majority and avoided a run-off election. Sen Kumpa close this episode with their track "Niawa

Nomadic Wax have been in this West African country and produced a unique documentary series, called 'African Underground: Democracy in Dakar'. The episodes all show the presidential election and how local hip-hop is shaping politics. They have to date produced six episodes on the 2007 election process. The videos will be made into a full length documentary.
The Democracy in Dakar Project is an interactive multi media project founded by Nomadic Wax/Notable and co produced with Sol Productions.

This video is an example of when relative democracy and freedom of expression is implemented in a country. Despite noticeable problems (poverty, high unemployment and censorship) Senegal is sometimes considered a model country in Africa. (According to Reporters Without Borders, Senegal’s media politics had in 2006 ‘noticeable problems’. Out of Africa’s 53 states, it was only Mali’s and Benin’s media that in 2005 qualified to have a 'good situation').

Africa as a continent is often associated with corruption, poverty, famine and HIV/Aids. Although there is more to Africa than that, it is fair to say that the continent suffers severely from weak civil society organisatons, lack of independent judiciaries and a lack of freedom of expression.

It was in Africa our culture as we know it started and it has played a significant role in shaping the world in which we live today. Ironically, although most evidence today points at Africa as being the cradle of humanity, most countries are young and its citizens are struggling to build nation states and to establish functioning democracies. Ghana was the first country that gained independence in Africa. This West African country celebrated its 50th birthday in March this year, an indication on how young many of the African countries actually are.

Parts of Africa is known to have been central to early world trade. East Africa was in the first millennium AD part of the Indian Ocean trading that included Persia, India and China. Scholars in North Africa exchanged ideas long before Europe's Age of Exploration set in at the 15th century. The continent was the birth place of human cultural development, some evidence being the pyramids and the early settlements around the Nile.

The last centuries have proved not to be as prosperous. Colonisation, plagues, coups, wars and ethnic cleansing is haunting much of Africa today.

Many people around the globe have turned their eyes towards Africa the last couple of years. People have slowly started to realise that it is no longer feasible to let Africa and Africans continue to struggle for survival. In June 2007 there was a follow up summit in Germany of the 2005 Gleanagels meeting in Scotland where leaders of the G8 countries (Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, UK, US and Russia) promised to eradicate poverty in Africa (For more information on this, see Ghana or Topics – economics).

The constitution in Senegal guarantees press freedom, and although self-censorship is often implemented, people can and do criticise poor governance and want to make changes. This documentary is evidence on that it is possible for people in Africa to make their voices heard outside of the continent, and that people are interested in its development. Followed by the 2007 summit, more eyes than ever are looking at Africa. Should we want Africa to once again be a continent that can develop and prosper on its own, we need to act upon these positive factors now. Waiting too long could have detrimental effects on the whole of Africa, the cradle of humanity, and indeed, the rest of the world.
