NEW DOCUMENTARY EXPLORES WHY TRADITIONAL
FOREIGN AID PROGRAMS ARE STILL FAILING THE COMMUNITIES THEY AIM TO HELP
Good Fortune to premiere this month at
SILVERDOCS festival in Washington, D.C. and Human Rights Watch International
Film Festival in New York City
(New
York, June 9, 2009) – Many African communities are in worse shape despite
trillions of foreign aid dollars aimed at ending world poverty. Good Fortune, a
provocative new documentary, explores the possibility that this failure may not
be despite the best efforts of Western do-gooders, but sometimes because of
them.
Good
Fortune presents an intimate portrait of two Kenyans at odds with large
international development organizations whose multi-million dollar aid projects
threaten to destroy their homes. In Nairobi, Silva’s home and business are
being demolished as part of a United Nations’ slum-upgrading project. In the
rural countryside, Jackson’s farm is being flooded by an American investor who
hopes to alleviate poverty by creating a multi-million dollar rice farm.
Called
a "sure bet" by The Washington Post, the film raises tough questions about
the ways these development projects have undermined efforts to bring Kenya and
other African nations out of extreme poverty. A lack of community involvement,
crass government corruption and an outsized sense of Western self-righteousness
compound to undermine projects forged with the best intentions.
“Good Fortune is the kind of
film that draws you in through the power of the characters and the intimacy of
the storytelling,” said Cara Mertes, director of the Documentary Film Program
at the Sundance Institute. “It combines artistry and issues in a beautiful
evocation of life from the ground up in Kenya, providing a unique look at the
question of international humanitarian aid, and its unintended
consequences."
Good
Fortune will premiere at the renowned SILVERDOCS: AFI/Discovery Channel Documentary
Festival on June 17 and June18 at the AFI Silver Theater in Silver Spring, MD,
where it will compete in the Sterling U.S. Feature Competition. The film will
also be featured as the Centerpiece Presentation of the Human Rights Watch
International Film Festival in New York City on June 24 at The Film Society of
Lincoln Center's Walter Reade Theater. Panel discussions on development
challenges and potential solutions will follow each screening, and will feature
the filmmakers and experts in the development field.
Good
Fortune has received support from the Sundance Institute and the Fulbright
Scholarship Program. Landon Van Soest is the director/producer of the film, and
Jeremy Levine is the producer/editor. The two also partnered in 2005 on the
award-winning documentary Walking the Line, a feature-length film following
civilian vigilantes along the U.S.-Mexico border.
